What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Prince Tal has spent his life isolated from the rest of the kingdom in order to hide his magic, something that is seen as extremely dangerous (especially after what his grandfather did). On his coming-of-age boat trip, Tal saves Athlen, who mysteriously survives a dive off his ship. Tal can't stop thinking about Athlen: could he be the one who accepts Tal for who he is, magic and all?


What I think (in 250 words or fewer): I haven't blogged in months; I have read a lot of good books but just couldn't bring myself to write about any of them, until now. I enjoyed this story so much I thought it would be a great way to ease back into regular blogging. And I did it!

Cemetery Boys--"On the bright side, he had actually summoned a real-life spirit. On the not-so-bright side, he had summoned the wrong one."

What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Transgender Yadriel wants to prove he is a real brujo, even though his family has not recognized his true gender. Along with his best friend Maritza, Yadriel performs his own quinces ritual and attempts to set the spirit of his murdered cousin free. However, Yadriel accidentally summons the spirit of (adorable!) Julian and is thrown into a murder mystery. Will Yadriel's family accept him as a true brujo, and will Julian's spirit find peace?


What I think (in 250 words or fewer): Cemetery Boys is a more light-hearted, less angsty read than I expected. Yadriel and Martiza are extremely adorable (and relatable) and Julian is so easy to fall for. 

The Lost Book of the White--"I guess I assumed you came to taunt us and lecture us"

What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): An old enemy (and not-dead friend) returns to torment Alec and Magnus again, this time stabbing Magnus with a magical thorn, which, if not fixed in time, will make Magnus a servant to the demon Sammael. With the help of their friends, Alec and Magnus venture into hell to save the day. But can their warlock son, Max, survive an extended visit with his grandma without accidentally burning down the institute with his out-of-control magic?


What I think (in 250 words or fewer): I was looking forward to reading this Eldest Curses book even more than Red Scrolls because of the timeline in which it was set, which is after Mortal Instruments but before Dark Artifices. Alec and Magnus are new parents and are deliriously happy and kissy. And Max excitedly and accidentally sets fires with his cute, baby warlock magic.

Wayward Son--"It hurts to look at you when you're this happy. And it hurts to look at you when you're depressed."

What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Yay, the Chosen One has saved the world! But why is Simon so depressed? And why has his relationship with Baz just . . . stalled? Penny decides that a change of scenery would benefit them all, so she, Baz, and Simon rent a convertible to cruise across the western United States, enjoying the desert and eventually visiting Agatha. Along the way, they encounter a new world of magickal creatures, including Vegas vampires and a devious cult.


What I think (in 250 words or fewer): Honestly, the beginning of this book was a bummer. I, someone who is super cynical in my own romantic life, just wanted things to be "happily-ever-after" for Baz and Simon, and they clearly weren't.  I emphasized strongly with Penny, who just wanted to "fix things" for everyone.

All Out--"Love is the only higher power I'll answer to"

About the anthology: Seventeen different young adult authors from across the LGBTQ+ spectrum each wrote stories that are included in this anthology. The stories take place during different time periods, locations, and cultures, and across multiple genres.

I am going to review this collection similar to how I reviewed The Bane Chronicles, but not exactly the same since each story has its own author and those authors are all brilliant in their own rights.

Also, this will be a live review! No, I am not usually a zombie reviewing books from my kingdom of the undead, although that sounds intriguing. By live, I mean I am going to read each story, and then write down my thoughts about it right away.


Short story title #1: "Roja"

Author: Anna-Marie McLemore (author of When the Moon Was Ours)

The Hidden Oracle--"When one is a god, the world hangs on your every word. When you're sixteen . . . not so much."

Title: The Hidden Oracle (The Trials of Apollo, Book #1)

Author: Rick Riordan


LGBTQ+ Representation: Main character is bisexual, secondary characters are gay.


What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Apollo, the (rather arrogant) god of the sun, music, and poetry, has been cast down from Olympus to Earth by Zeus as punishment. Apollo is appalled (ha!) that he is now a gawky teenage boy named Lester Papadopoulos. He must restore five oracles to to regain his godly status, and since he no longer has powers, Apollo must seek the assistance of Percy Jackson and the other campers at Camp Half-Blood.


What I think (in 250 words or fewer): I adore Riordan's Percy Jackson and Magnus Chase series; the narrators written in first-person point-of-view have amazing voices. Apollo's voice is also amazing, and I think I was smiling and lol-ing throughout much of this book, even through the suspenseful parts.

The Songbird's Refrain--"The future is not linear, my little songbird" OR "I'm a bluebird that's been dreaming"

LGBTQ+ Representation: Lesbians. More than one.


What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Elizabeth finds a flyer advertising a one-of-a-kind show appearing nearby. When she attends the show, she is fascinated by one of the acts: a woman, covered in feathers, with the same mysterious blue eyes that were on the flyer--trapped in a cage. When the woman dies, Elizabeth finds herself trapped in the cage, growing feathers, forced to sing nightly. Can she escape the power of the sadistic witch, the Mistress, who has trapped her?


What I think (in 250 words or fewer): I spent the first half of this book singing "I'm a Bluebird" from Follow that Bird. Remember? Big Bird is trapped in a cage and forced to sing by these two evil guys who kidnap him for the freakshow part of their fair, and why are there so many twins in that audience? I couldn't stop picturing poor Elizabeth as Big Bird.

It's safe to say that all resemblances to Sesame Street end there.

Before I Let Go--"Kyra burned so brightly. Until she had nothing left to give."

What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Corey and Kyra were best friends in their Small Alaskan town, Lost Creek. Corey goes to boarding school, and days before she visits Lost, Kyra dies. Corey returns to Lost, but something's different. The people reject Corey, calling her an outsider, and worship the memory of Kyra, claiming Kyra's death was "meant to be." Corey is determined to find out the cause of Kyra's death and figure out the mysterious events in Lost.


What I think (in 250 words or fewer): What am I reading? I asked myself at least one hundred times while reading. And yet, I couldn't put it down.

Girls of Paper and Fire--"When the world denies you choices, you make your own"

Title: Girls of Paper and Fire

LGBTQ+ Representation: Two main characters in f/f relationship


What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Lei (part of the Paper caste, the lowest class in Ikhara) lives a peaceful life in her country village until she is kidnapped and taken to the palace of the Demon King to become one of his concubines. The first time Lei is summoned to the cruel, violent king, she fights him instead of submitting to him. Lei falls in love with another Paper Girl, Wren, who is hiding a dangerous secret.


What I think: I knew the book was going to contain scenes of violence and sexual assault, but I still was taken aback by the beginning, which contains a plot event that has been a deal-breaker for me in the past. I did not give up the book, since this event is necessary to give Lei a reason to take the kidnapping soldiers seriously but come on. Some of us have NEVER gotten over these two books (do not click on my links unless you want to be spoiled).

Lord of Shadows--"Lex malla, lex nulla" OR "I brought chocolate"

What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): After the events of Lady Midnight, Emma begins fake-dating Julian's half-faerie brother Mark, in order to make Julian fall out-of-love with her so that they can escape the Parabatai curse. Meanwhile, the Unseelie King is tired of the cold peace and refuses to follow the Shadowhunters' demands, the Seelie Queen is trying to get the Black Volume for her own needs, and where is Annabel?  Is she alive?


What I think (in 250 words or fewer): I've already talked about what I love about the Dark Artifices series, and even though I meant to only talk about Lady Midnight in that review, I actually mentioned quite a bit of Lord of Shadows also.  Oops.  So if you haven't read that review, you should read it first, and then we will (well, I, but you can virtually) geek out about what we want to see and don't want to see happen in Queen of Air and Darkness.

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy--"I'd rather write my own legends. Or be the story someone else looks to someday."

Title: The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy

What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Felicity escapes to London for two reasons: to avoid marrying Callum the baker and enroll in medical school; however, men are the ones in charge and they will not admit women to their schools.  Felicity then finds out her childhood friend, Johanna, is marrying a famous doctor, so Felicity plans to crash the wedding and meet the doctor. This leads to Felicity and Joanna involved in an adventure of medicine, pirates, petticoats, and sea dragons.


What I think:  Pirates and Petticoats is the companion book to Vice and Virtue.  I didn't love Felicity's voice as much as I loved Monty's, but I definitely enjoyed her story.

Lady Midnight--"The Law is annoying, but it is also flexible"

Title: Lady Midnight, Book #1 of The Dark Artifices

Author: Cassandra Clare


What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Emma Carstairs, with the help of her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, is determined to find out who killed her parents, but discover a demon plot in Los Angeles instead.  Julian is protecting his uncle Arthur and struggling to keep his siblings together, while trying to deny his love for Emma, which has gone far beyond what one should feel for his parabatai.  Julian's brother Mark returns, while a group within the Clave fights for control.


What I think: As I wrote in a previous review, I was slow to warm-up to Cassandra Clare, but by the time I read City of Heavenly Fire, I was completely hooked.  Clare's books just keep getting better and better, and wow, I really like Lady Midnight and its sequel, Lord of Shadows.  But right now, I'm going to go over some of my favorite aspects of Lady Midnight:

When the Moon Was Ours--"The blue whirled in on itself like the curves of a nautilus shell"

Author: Anna-Marie McLemore

What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer):  Best friends Miel and Sam are known as the strange ones in their town. Miel's wrist grows roses, and Sam paints moons to hang in the trees.  Miel lives with Aracely, the town curandera, and Sam pollinates the pumpkins in the Bonner's pumpkin field.  When the beautiful, yet evil Bonner sisters want to use Miel's roses to enhance their powers, they discover a secret about Sam that they threaten to reveal to the whole town.

What I think (in 250 words or fewer): McLemore is Mexican-American who describes her writings as magical realism. She blends elements of folk and fairy tale and culture in her stories.  Miel appears out of a water tower when she is five, Aracely cures the townspeople of "love sickness," and Sam is a bacha posh who wants to remain a boy.

Carry On--"My wayward son, for there'll be peace when you are done"

Title: Carry On (sometimes called Carry On: the Rise and Fall of Simon Snow)

Author: Rainbow Rowell


What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Simon Snow attends the Watford School of Magicks, and according to a prophecy, he's the "Chosen One" who will save the magickal community from the Insidious Humdrum, a magic-eating monster that looks like Simon. However, Simon can't even get his wand to work correctly, let alone control his magic (he mostly sets things on fire).  Meanwhile, Simon's nemesis, roommate, and possible (vampire) love interest, Baz, is missing from school for their final term.


What I think (in 250 words or fewer): Carry On is a spin-off of Fangirl, a book in which the main character, Cath, writes fanfiction about Simon Snow, the protagonist of a Harry Potter-style series of novels.
