Title: Juliet Takes a Breath
Author: Gabby Rivera
LGBTQ+ Representation: Main character and many others are lesbian, and supporting characters are bi and queer.
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Juliet is thrilled when she, a self-described "closeted Puerto Rican baby dyke from the Bronx," lands an internship with her favorite, feminist author Harlowe Brisbane. Coming out to her close-knit family right before leaving does not go well. In Portland, Oregan, Juliet enjoys researchin (and the cute girl-librarian), but the mostly white, lesbian feminist scene is not quite what Juliet expects. Will a trip to visit extended family help Juliet define feminism for herself?
What I think (In my ranting, I totally spoil 2/3 of the book. To avoid spoilers, click on read more, scroll down to the six rainbows, and read after that): Juliet's story takes place in 2003, in the summer after her first year of college; I thought "that's not that long ago!" but then realized it was almost twenty years ago. Wow.
I like that Juliet researched at the library to research all these women and topics on random bits of paper that Harlowe has written on and thrown into a box. I had never heard of Lolita Lebron, for example. I knew of Del Martin, but she's worth reading about again. Banana Republic is not just an overpriced, preppy clothing store. Kira the cute librarian who bakes and drives a motorcycle? Sign me up! (Okay, not really because I'm terrified of riding on motorcycles. But still, she sounds hot!)

Leah on the Offbeat--"It's like it doesn't even matter if I like my body, because there's always someone there to remind me that I shouldn't"
Title: Leah on the Offbeat
Author: Becky Albertalli
LGBTQ+ Representation: Main character and supporting characters are bisexual; secondary characters are gay.
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Leah Burke is getting ready to finish her senior year, and in some ways, she's totally OVER high school, but in other ways, she doesn't want anything to change. Prom is coming up, friends are hooking up and breaking up, and college is starting to seem very close. Also, Leah has not told her friends that she is bisexual and is crushing hard on her friend Abby, who is (probably?) completely straight.
What I think (in 250 words or fewer): I need to apologize to all of the fanfiction writers out there that I scoffed at when they began to ship Leah and Abby. I was totally NOT on board with that ship; Abby was with Nick and that's where I thought she would stay. However, this book did a good job of changing my mind and wanting Abby and Leah to be a couple.

The Music of What Happens--"This was Different. This was Real."
Title: The Music of What Happens
Author: Bill Konigsberg
LGBTQ+ Representation: Both main characters are gay.
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Max and Jordan couldn't be more different: Max plays sports and hangs out with "his dude bros" while Jordan writes poetry and shops with "his wives." Max agrees to help Jordan run his late father's food truck for the summer, and their friendship turns into something more. However, both boys are keeping secrets (Max was raped recently; Jordan's mother's gambling is becoming more problematic) that threaten their newfound relationship.
What I think: Every time I read a Konigsberg book, I am always inspired to write a lot about it.
I think this is a compliment to his books--plus, I am a former English teacher who analyzes books and runs book clubs for fun. So for this review, I am going to discuss what I found fun and sweet, and reasons that I want to hug both Max and Jordan.

Dear Rachel Maddow--"Liberty and justice for all. Well. Shmiberty and Shmustice anyway"
Title: Dear Rachel Maddow
Author: Adrienne Kisner
LGBTQ+ Representation: Main character and two supporting characters identify as lesbians. F/F relationship
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Brynn's life is not going the greatest lately. Her older brother died of a drug overdose, mom and stepfather are abusive, girlfriend broke up with her, and grades are so bad, she is not eligible to write for the newspaper (the only part about high school that she enjoys). As a class assignment, she begins to keep a journal in which she asks for advice via emails to her idol: Rachel Maddow.
What I think (in 250 words or fewer): I love Rachel Maddow so this title caught my eye. I thought the story was going to be light-hearted, but instead it was delightfully, timely, and frustratingly political--and I enjoyed it immensely.

What if it's Us--"The universe wouldn't get us together for just one summer, right?"
Title: What if it's Us
Authors: Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Arthur is working as an intern in New York City for the summer when he meets Ben, a New York native, at the post office. Arthur believes in fate and the power of the universe. Ben is a more jaded--after all, he was at the post office to mail back his ex-boyfriend's stuff. When they reconnect via mixed connections, they begin dating. Are they destined for a great summer romance, or a short forgettable fling?
What I think (in 250 words or fewer): I read and enjoyed all of Albertalli's other books, which made me feel warm and fuzzy. I enjoy following Silvera on Twitter, but his books are so sad--one upset me so much I couldn't even; one I'm scared to read because of THE TITLE, and the third is in my TBR pile, but I'm determined.
I fully admit I am procrastinating reading some wonderful, well-written Silvera books because I know how much I cry, and I cry at almost everything. It's exhausting!

Jack of Hearts (and Other Parts)--"Let's talk about sex, baby!" OR "I wish you so much love--because love has nothing to do with sex"
Title: Jack of Hearts (and Other Parts)
Author: L.C. Rosen
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Jack is an openly gay high school student who is not ashamed of his active sex life. He agrees to write an "anonymous" (technically--most students know he's the writer) teen sex advice column for his friend. Jack enjoys giving advice until someone begins leaving notes in his locker that start out admiring but become threatening. Can Jack figure out who his stalker is before his friends and family are in danger?
What I think: Hey guess what?? This book talks about sex!! And boy, was it ever mentioned in every review and article I read about the book. Even all of the blurbs on the cover are about how sex-positive the book is. I was actually getting tired of reading every reviewer mention sex, but my curiosity (and excellent employee discount at work) got the best of me, so I bought this book the day it came out.

The Porcupine of Truth--Part 1: "There are so many wise people who have taught us so many wise lessons"
Title: The Porcupine of Truth
Author: Bill Konigsberg
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Carson is not looking forward to spending the summer with his dying, estranged father in Billings, Montana, who is still angry about the disappearance of his father (Carson's grandfather) over thirty years ago. Carson's summer becomes more interesting when he meets Aisha, a beautiful teenage lesbian who was kicked out of her father's home. Carson and Aisha vow to find out what happened to Carson's grandfather--why did he leave? Could he still be alive somewhere?
Confession time: I actually read this book back at the end of July and keep renewing it from the library. I had this post in draft mode ever since. It's not that I didn't want to review this book--in fact, Bill Konigsberg's books have inspired me to write a lot; and since this one was my favorite of his books, I wanted this post to be perfect!

If I Was Your Girl--"Pro-tip: read the author's notes FIRST"
Title: If I Was Your Girl
Author: Meredith Russo
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Amanda moves in with her estranged father to attend a new school for her senior year of high school, and everything seems to be going well for her so far. She meets a new group of girlfriends and even begins dating Grant. But Amanda has a secret: she is a transgender female and knows that if anyone finds out the truth about her past, her newfound happiness could be over.
What I think: Sometimes I am a brat and flip ahead in the pages of the book to see what's going to happen later in the story. I sometimes spoil major plot points or even the whole ending for myself when I do this, so I nearly always regret it (but I can't stop doing it because, well, I have no idea). But anyway, with this book, I actually did not regret flipping through towards the end.

Wide Awake--"Both dated and eerily prophetic"
Title: Wide Awake
Author: David Levithan
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): In the near future, the first gay and Jewish United States president is elected. The green states have prevailed, with their Jesus Revolution, All Equal Movement, and Great Community. However, the governor of Kansas is claiming voter fraud and demands a recount of his state. High school boyfriends Jimmy and Duncan, along the rest of their political group and thousands of others, head to Kansas to protest the governor and support the president-elect.
What I think: While reading Wide Awake, I could only think how difficult it was going to be to write about the book without comparing it to today's political climate. Goodness knows I do enough complaining about politics, and those of you who know me in real life are either nodding or rolling your eyes (probably both 😉).
Sooooo . . . . I am going to list some of the major events in the book, and you can see how they compare to today's political climate yourself.

Perfect Ten--"Love can make you stupid. And crazy."
Title: Perfect Ten
Author: L. Philips
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Sam has been on a romantic dry-spell for a couple of years, ever since he broke up with the only eligible gay boy (and his best friend), Landon. Sam is convinced to perform a Wiccan spell with his friend, Meg, to find the perfect boyfriend. Could it be Gus, the French exchange student; Travis, the sexy musician; Jamie, the talented artist; or loyal Landon, who wants another chance? Will Sam ever find his true love?
What I think (in 250 words or fewer): Perfect Ten is a fun summer beach read. The slight angst is of the teenage romantic type, and everything turns out fabulous, in the fairy-tale style of Harlequin romance novels.

Little and Lion--"A good choice for a literature circle or book club"
Title: Little and Lion
Author: Brandy Colbert
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Suzette returns to her LA home after spending the school year in a boarding school. While she was there, she had a romantic relationship with her roommate and is now confused about her sexuality. While home, Suzette develops a crush on her female coworker, Rafaela, and begins dating her childhood friend, Emil. Lionel, Suzette's bipolar stepbrother, begins dating Rafaela and stops taking his medication. Suzette is very worried about Lionel, which affects her other relationships.
What I think (in 250 words or fewer): I just finished reading and am still trying to process all the issues and discussion-able topics in Little and Lion. If I were still teaching high school, this would be a great choice for a small group discussion literature circle.

Ramona Blue--"Not a free ticket out of queer town"
Title: Ramona Blue
Author: Julie Murphy
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Ramona lives in Eulogy, a small southern Mississippi town known for its beach and vacation rentals. She, her father, and her pregnant sister Hattie live in a small trailer and can barely make ends meet. When Ramona's childhood friend Freddie moves into town, Ramona and he have a romantic relationship, which confuses Ramona because she identifies as a lesbian. Plus, Ramona struggles with what she wants to do after graduation--will her family survive without her?
What I think (in 250 words or fewer): I usually don't read any other reviews of a book until I've written my own, but I made an exception when I discovered so many mixed reviews of Ramona Blue. I think it's too far to say that the book is lesbophobic, biphobic, and acephobic, and even though I agree that it's insightful and moving, I didn't think it was perfect.

Honestly Ben--"With a friend to call my own, I'll never be alone"
Title: Honestly Ben
Author: Bill Konigsberg
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Ben is moving on after last semester. He's excelling at schoolwork, acting as the captain of the baseball team, and starting a relationship with Hannah, a cool quirky girl he met in the library. He is even awarded a prestigious scholarship (if he can keep his grade up in calculus!). But Ben is not sure that he has all the answers, and cannot stop thinking about and missing the close friendship he had with Rafe.
What I think (in 250 words or fewer): The tagline is a line from Michael Jackson's "Ben," which has been recorded by lots of people. The review contains spoilers, but I tried to be as vague as possible.
After the events in Openly Straight, Ben finds himself without any close friends. Sure, he hangs out with people from the baseball team, but they are not the close friendship he had with Rafe, whom he can't stop thinking about.

Openly Straight--[Insert tagline here]
Title: Openly Straight
Author: Bill Konigsberg
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Rafe has lived his last few years as "the gay kid," and he's tired of being defined by his sexuality. So when he transfers to an all-boys boarding school, Rafe decides to "openly straight"--not necessarily going back into the closet, just letting people assume he's a straight jock, just "one of the guys." Rafe's plan seems to be working, until he falls in love with one of his friends, who has no idea Rafe's gay.
What I think (This will definitely be more than 250 words): I set up perimeters for this blog for a reason: I wanted to keep the reviews short and sweet, so that I will choose my words carefully, only write what's important, and not overwhelm myself by thinking I have to write a lot about each book. That being said, I have already reviewed a few books where I just had to write over 250 words.
Oh well, I made the rules, I get to break 'em 😉.

Inheritance--"I’m not going to waste my time thinking about people who hate me"
Title: Inheritance
Author: Malinda Lo (I am doing an in-depth author study on Malinda Lo as a final paper for a class, and this is the fourth of five fiction novels I am reviewing)
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): In this sequel to Adaptation, David and Reese are struggling to figure out whom to trust. Should they trust the Imria, the alien race who wants to help humanity become better? Should they trust the government, who claim to protect them from humanity-using aliens? Also, do the special powers they have mean they are now aliens, too? Plus, Reese's new relationship with David is tested because Reese still has feelings for Amber, her Imrian ex-girlfriend.
What I think (in 250 words or fewer): Inheritance was more intense and less predictable than Adaptation, which I appreciated. I honestly could not figure out who the "good guys" were. The Imria want to "fix" humanity, but it would be a risky procedure, and the ethical question is, does humanity really need to be fixed?

Anything Could Happen--"Ellie Goulding and George Bailey"
Title: Anything Could Happen
Author: Will Walton
What it’s about (in 75 words or fewer): Tretch has an idyllic life in a small town with his supportive family, loving grandparents, and best friend, Matt. Tretch enjoys choreographing dances to Taylor Swift songs, but his biggest secret is that he's gay and has a secret crush on Matt.
What I think (in 250 words or fewer): I tried to read this a few months ago but lost interest halfway through. I gave it another chance; it was worth reading.
The relationship Tretch has with his parents, brother, and grandparents is wonderful. Tretch's favorite movie is It's a Wonderful Life, which delights me (Tretch fan-girling over a cardboard cutout of Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey made my day!). Tretch is extremely excited about visiting his grandparents and experiencing all their Christmas traditions together. Tragic news makes the holiday bittersweet for the family this year, allowing Tretch to discover the importance of love across space and time.
